Mother's Day New Releases and Tote Bag Sale

4/22/2024

Spring is showing itself all around, and taking inspiration from the longer, warmer days, I wanted to share one of David’s favorite stories about his very beginnings as an artist!

Catholic school was the foundation of David’s early life in Bloomington, Illinois. That environment, as many well know and especially in the late 1940s-50s, was extremely regimented and didn’t allow much room at all for creative expression. Yet, early on when David was in elementary school, it was springtime and he drew a picture of a robin along with her nest and eggs--a sure sign of the season! His teacher, a nun who perhaps had a softer side than some of her fellow Sisters at the school, was so impressed with David’s drawing that she called him up to the front of the classroom so that he could show his piece to his classmates and talk a little about it.

This was a huge moment for David, who, as he later found out, was dyslexic and had trouble in school. BUT, he could draw, and he loved making pictures that brought joy and excitement to others. It was his first opportunity to see what being creative could feel like, along with his first recognition as an artist, and from that blossomed an extensive and award-winning creative career! I’m lucky and very grateful all these years later to actually have this drawing David did (and believe me, it’s kept very safe). Below is our famed robin, done in what I can assume is crayon and colored pencil. I hope you enjoy!

Also coming up this spring is Mother’s Day, and we wanted to celebrate with new releases and a sale! This sweet painting, titled "Great Big Beautiful Day," has a vintage feel and is just so happy, not to mention unusual in that we see the full, smiling faces of the cowgirls.

And second, our cowgirl, Kendra, is having some fun on the job. Both of these paintings are available as giclée reproductions and come with custom copper leafing, which gives them the look of the original paintings. Order yours on our site, daviddevarystudio.com
